How do you explain SEO to your friends & family?

The nice thing about the ordinary gigs is that everyone knows about them. If you are a doctor or lawyer, people won’t stare at you when you tell them about your job, but if you are an SEO or a Blogger, you will probably have troubles explaining your gig to them.
This is what I experience most of the time. At college, when somebody asks me about what I do, and I say “I’m a Search Marketing Consultant” (I don’t even say I’m an SEO because I don’t want to confuse them more) they just stare at me and say “what the hell is that”?
So I just start explaining the whole thing and most of the time they don’t understand it. Is it because SEO is so geeky or just a weird job? Some of my family members think that I work for Google which is really funny.
Is it about the concept of SEO? The acronyms and terms? Or it is just because our job is not classified as a job in the first place?

It’s because it’s geeky.

Yeah, that is true but I believe as this industry grows more, people will know about it more.
Anyway, you’ve got a great site there, but sadly I couldn’t read that language; is it Spanish or some kind of Latin?

A great question! Try to explain SEO to others is by no means easy - and quite a few SEO consultants know this, I suspect.
SEO consultants generally deal with people who have some idea as to what SEO is, but I think I would explain SEO to my father as being ‘the art of ensuring internet search engines find your website more easily’. OK, so this is a gross over simplification, I know, but it may help.
My brother works in internet marketing anyway, so he knows, roughly, what SEO is.
Kind regards,
Alex
